Benjamin Moore Kendall Charcoal: A Bold Neutral That Never Feels Flat
Some paint colors quietly support a space, while others define it. Benjamin Moore Kendall Charcoal (HC-166) does both! Rich, grounded, and endlessly versatile, this deep charcoal has become a designer favorite for clients who want drama without starkness.
It’s the kind of color that feels confident, classic, and intentional while never feeling trendy and never cold.

Meet Kendall Charcoal
Kendall Charcoal is a deep gray with both depth and presence. Unlike many modern charcoals that lean cool or toward blue, this color has a softer, more traditional feel that works beautifully across a wide range of design styles. Kendall Charcoal works in homes from transitional and modern farmhouse to classic and even coastal interiors.
It’s dark enough to anchor a space yet nuanced enough to show a subtle warmth as the light changes throughout the day.
Warm or Cool?
Kendall Charcoal is best described as a warm charcoal. Its warmth comes from subtle and subdued brown undertones that prevent it from feeling steely or industrial.
This warmth makes it ultra flexible in rooms with mixed finishes, warm wood tones, or softer whites. Kendall Charcoal is often far easier to live with than cooler grays that can read blue or flat in low light.
The Art of Pairing Kendall Charcoal
One of Kendall Charcoal’s greatest strengths is how effortlessly it pairs with other colors. Some of my favorite combinations include:
· Soft whites and creams for contrast and balance
· Warm wood tones, from light oak to walnut
· Greige and taupe neutrals for layered sophistication
· Muted blues and sages for a calm, tailored palette. Please take a look my Kendall Charcoal paint color palette for a lovely mixed of colors!
· Brass, bronze, and black metal finishes for added richness
This color acts as a neutral that grounds a room, allowing surrounding materials and textures to shine.

The Best Trim Pairings
Choosing the right trim color is key to letting Kendall Charcoal look its best. I recommend:
Benjamin Moore White Dove – soft, warm, and timeless.

Sherwin Williams Pure White – a soft yet clean white that is a lovely pairing with Kendal Charcoal.

Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee can also work if your desire a more creamy and traditional result.

I do suggest avoiding cool or blue based whites, which can make Kendall Charcoal feel muddy or dull by comparison.
Why Sampling Matters (Especially with Dark Colors)
Like all deep paint colors, Kendall Charcoal is highly responsive to lighting. Always sample before committing (have I said this before?).
· Test on multiple walls
· Observe it morning, afternoon, and evening
· Compare it next to flooring, countertops, and trim
Please note that In bright rooms, it can read rich and refined. In lower light spaces, it becomes cozy and dramatic. Still beautiful, just different.
Peel and stick samples from Samplize help make the sampling process easy and mess free. Follow this link to get your Kendall Charcoal sample!
